Scalp Micro-pigmentation is a non-surgical technique that creates the effect of a very short haircut by tattooing on to the scalp and placing small ink droplets below the surface of the skin. Combined with a very short haircut it gives the appearance that hair remains on the scalp. The technique was first offered to the public in 2006.
How long does a scalp micro-pigmentation treatment take?
Scalp micro-pigmentation treatments usually take three to four sessions to complete, although this can vary depending on the coverage you need (i.e. your hair loss), the style you would like and numerous other factors.
This is no ordinary tattooing process. During the treatments, microneedles are used to layer pigment dots on your scalp. SMP is a highly-technical, specialised process performed by trained technicians. The tiny “dots” of pigment, placed in the dermal layer of skin, create the illusion of a full head of shaved hair.
Is scalp micro-pigmentation painful?
Whilst there is an element of pain involved in SMP techniques, many of the people who have received them suggest that it is actually less painful than a tattoo on other parts of the body, due in part to the limited depth available, the lower number of pain receptors in the head and also because of the small micro-needles that are used to create the SMP technique
Of course, there will be some discomfort, as you are effectively creating a series of tiny wounds in the skin when each dot is applied. A scab heals over the wound and eventually falls away, taking some of the implanted pigment with it. Furthermore, the immune system attacks the pigments, causing them to shrink.
As you can appreciate, this creates a “fading” of the dots which varies from person to person but necessitates the need for multiple sessions to get the required pigment shade.
What is the healing time with scalp micro-pigmentation?
If you don’t mind going in to work with a head that is a little raw then there is no recovery period following a scalp micro-pigmentation treatment, although slight redness on the skin from each tattoo session may last between 24-48 hours. The next session will typically be booked for seven days after the first session, meaning that this can be completed in a month or less Use the form below to book a free, no-obligation consultation with an independent scalp micro pigmentation specialist near you.
