Hair transplants surgery is an evolving technique and new versions of the surgery are constantly emerging. At the present time, FUE (Follicular unit extraction) and FUT (Follicular unit transplantation) are the main surgery types available.
What is Follicle Unit Transplantation?
In a FUT style operation, the hair is moved in strips from the back and side of the scalp under anaesthetic. Because of this, FUT is sometimes referred to as the strip method.
Once extracted, the donor strip is cut into individual follicular units. One of the follicular units are prepared they are then inserted into small holes made by the surgeon.
The actual placement of the hair is usually completed by a specialist nurse.
What is a Follicle Unit Extraction hair transplant?
A Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE hair transplant involves harvesting individual follicles. These can contain anything between 1 to 4 hairs. Units are extracted from the harvesting points of between 0.6mm and 1.0mm in diameter.
Adding the hair to the scalp is done using either very small micro blades or fine needles to puncture the sites for receiving the grafts
Before the surgery begins the doctor will figure out the placing, density and pattern for the newly implanted hair aligning the wounds to create a realistic hair pattern.
What are the advantages of FUE surgery hair surgery?
FUE surgery is more time consuming that FUT surgery but generally gives better results. It can take anywhere from a couple of hours to extract 200 grafts to a surgery over two consecutive days for up to 3,000 grafts
FUE has a number of advantages including
- Very natural results
- No need for large areas of scalp tissue to be harvested
- No linear incision on the back of the head and it doesn't leave a linear scar
- Only small, puncture scars remain visible
- Post-surgical pain and discomfort are minimized
- No stitch removal
- Full recovery in less than 7 days
