Most men will develop the condition of Gynecomastia (also known as moobs and man-boobs) at some point during their lives. It’s particularly common as men age and lose muscle definition. However, if you are developing the condition earlier in adulthood, particularly whilst you are still playing the dating game, it can be much more of an issue for your self-confidence.
If exercise hasn’t helped, then it might be time to contact Private Cosmetic and arrange for one of our independent surgeons to get in touch and arrange a consultation in a private clinic near you.
What does gynecomastia surgery involve?
Gynecomastia surgery is effectively breast reduction surgery for men. It is usually carried out under a general anaesthetic. There are several techniques available to skilled plastic surgeons, but in most cases, the operation involves making an incision around the nipple and then using liposuction to suck out the excess fatty tissue that is causing the breast growth.
In some cases where there is a lot of tissue to be removed, the surgeon will extend the cuts and reposition the nipples to ensure an aesthetically pleasing result. Typically this will take about 90 minutes. You will usually need to stay in the hospital overnight, although this is not always the case if the surgery is smaller and completed early enough in the day for the patient to recover
How long does it take to recover from gynecomastia surgery?
It can take a few weeks to fully recover from male breast reduction surgery. You may need to take a few days off work if you feel pain, or if your job is very physical. It can take up to six months to see the full results of the work of the surgeon. You should avoid stretching, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for up to six weeks after the operation. You can drive again when it's no longer painful to wear a seatbelt, which may be several weeks.
Whilst you heal you will need to wear an elastic garment day and night for a few weeks after the operation. The doctor will also ensure that the wounds receive dressings and give advice about your stitches. Usually, after one or two weeks, your stitches will either dissolve or be removed at an outpatient clinic.
